Were the prophets antisemites?

Just listen to them!

The Book of Isaiah opens as follows:

For the LORD hath spoken:

I reared children and brought them up,

And they have rebelled against Me.

An ox knows his owner,

An ass his master’s crib;

Israel does not know,

My people take no thought.

Ah sinful nation,

People laden with iniquity,

Brood of evil-doers,

Depraved children!

He goes on in this vein for 66 chapters (including deutero-Isaiah). And this is not an outlier!

The Babylonian Exile

Jeremiah is no better. Excerpts from chapter 4:

Announce concerning Jerusalem

Watchers are coming from a distant land

They raise their voices against the towns of Judah

Like guards of fields, they surround her on every side

For she has rebelled against me.

Your conduct and your acts

Have brought this upon you;

This is your bitter punishment;

It pierces your heart.

For my people are stupid!

They give me no heed;

They are foolish children,

They are not intelligent.

They are clever at doing wrong,

But unable to do right.

Reading this, I realized that Isaiah and Jeremiah could not teach at Columbia University, neither could their books be assigned as requiredreading: they violate the IHRA definition of antisemitism! They blame the Jews for the persecutions they suffer!

And there is a lot more of this stuff in the Bible. ADL should take a look at it.
